Smoke-Free Campus
Smoke-Free Initiative

Beginning April 26, 2010, Eastwick College will be a tobacco-free campus. Smoking will be prohibited in all buildings, entranceways, parking lots, and green areas. Eliminating smoking from our campus will benefit the entire Eastwick College community for the following reasons:

1. For the safety and well-being of students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Second-hand smoke is dangerous, and can be carried inside the building through entranceways and open windows, even if smokers stand at a significant distance from the building. A smoke-free campus will reflect a genuine respect for the entire Eastwick College community and our visitors.

2. To promote public and personal health. Eastwick College offers programs in the healthcare field, where students learn to help others in a medical setting. Eliminating tobacco will guarantee that our students, faculty, and staff represent a higher standard of public and personal health.

3. To increase productivity and encourage success. Student, faculty, and staff wellness affects every aspect of the Eastwick College community. Without the distraction of “going out for a smoke” or being affected by second hand smoke, a healthy environment that is more conducive to learning and productivity is created.

4. The facts against tobacco are clear. Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death each year in the United States. For every one smoking-related death that occurs, there are an additional twenty people suffering from a smoking-related illness. Preventing smoking on campus can encourage individuals to cut down on tobacco use, or even quit altogether.
